Sony UBP-X800

The UBP-X800 is a 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray player with a difference: it's also a universal audio disc player and a hi-res audio player. Sony may be a tad late to the 4K Blu-ray party, but this triple threat is worth the wait, especially considering its...

Consider the UBP-X800 Blu-ray player a high-end steal.

Sony UBP-X800 4K UHD Blu-ray player review

Great video matched with exceptional audio

Superb 4K UHD Blu-ray picture performance ; 4K Netflix and Amazon onboard ; SACD and DVD-A compatibility ; Hi-Res Audio file playback

No analogue stereo output ; Not Dolby Vision compatible

Sony hits the UHD sweet spot with the UBP-X800 - a brilliant, beautiful 4K UHD player at a sensible price.

Sony UBP-X800 review: Top-class 4K Blu-ray playback

It might cost more than the Xbox One S, but it's quicker, quieter and video quality is superb

Sensational image quality ; Wi-Fi and Bluetooth streaming ; Good selection of apps

Mediocre upsampling ; No support for Dolby Vision

Out of all the 4K Blu-ray players I’ve reviewed, the Sony UBP-X800 ticks all the right boxes. It might not be as cheap as the Xbox One S , nor as capable the Oppo UDP-203 in its upscaling capabilities but, that aside, the £316 asking price of the Sony...

Sony UBP-X800 review

Sony announced its first 4K Blu-ray player in September of 2016, the UBP-X1000 , and while it looked like it was "the business", it was also a sobering $700 (roughly £540 or AU$940). Fast forward six months, though, and the more affordable version is...

The Sony UBP-X800 4K Blu-ray player offers excellent design and oozes a "premium" vibe. Video quality is as good as any player we've tested. It's incredibly fast at loading apps and has some impressive features including Bluetooth streaming.

It can be slow to load 4K discs. Limited number of audio outputs: no optical digital or stereo analog. The player requires a little hands-on fine-tuning to get the most out of music and DVD replay. No Dolby Vision.

The Sony UBP-X800 4K Blu-ray player has impressive build quality and video performance, but the incumbent Samsung is better value.

Sony UBP-X800 review

  (Rating Hidden)

It's rarely a good sign when the first thing you notice about a product is its price, but that's undeniably the case with the Sony UBP-X800 Blu-ray DVD player. Does it have all of the qualities demanded of it to justify the asking price? Or is it...

Sony UBP-X800 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Player Review

Sony's first 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray player impresses with a superior build quality and superb picture and audio but is there something missing?

Flawless disc playback ; Universal disc support ; Great audio performance ; Good range of apps with 24p support ; Very quiet in use and well-built

No Dolby Vision support ; No analogue outputs ; No display

The may have been late to the party but it was certainly worth the wait with a minimalist design, classy finish and fantastic build quality. The player supports every disc format you can think of, not to mention just about every file format, making it...

Sony UBP-X800 review

Slim, sleek design ; Gorgeous 4K, HDR picture ; Top-tier audio, including Dolby Atmos and DTS:X

No Dolby Vision

With the ability to play back any disc in your collection — audio included — with incredible quality, the Sony UBP-X800 is a great centerpiece for your home theater, and it won’t cost you an arm and a leg to get it.

The UBP-X800 has impressive build quality and video performance, but the cheaper Sony offers a better deal.
